NEW PRESERVATION TOOLS

Whether it's Mire Mare or a BASIC tape you found in the attic, it needs to be preserved digitally. Post here and experts can help to do so.

Automatic downloads are tricky. Sometimes file links change on each new release (if version number is part of a filename, for instance). Sometimes a new release contains different files. Sometimes it makes sense to store different versions (such as PAW and AGD releases), not just the latest. And so on...

In case of titles updated constantly, we usually keep a copy of the latest version (or multiple versions when it makes sense), in addition to links to the original URL (home page and perhaps links to specific files if their filenames never change). This way, we get everything preserved in case the original URL disappears (which happens quite often), and users have easy access to the URL so they can check if there's a more recent version available.

Do you have any specific title in mind that's updated frequently? I would like to take a look.

Einar Saukas wrote: Thu Oct 21, 2021 12:24 am To solve this problem, my suggestion is adding a new field for "home page link" in preservation tools within the form to "add a new (MIA) title/entry". If it makes it easier for you, this form could always insert these home pages into downloads. My release scripts will automatically move them to related links when they are at itch.io, for instance.
Yes, it could work easily for new added entries. But it would be more complicated, if I would want to add this feature for "Small changes for existing ZXDB title/entry" form too (people could add those links retrospectively). When I would need to check if 'home page link' already exists or not I would need to implement your complete logic which is behind your automatic scripts.

It is no problem for me either, only I just need reassurance that this solution will be more permanent and will not change in a few next months.

URLs get outdated, but it's worth preserving them. Googling an old URL can take you to a backup (way back machine) or a file copy stored somewhere else.

Most NedoOS releases have many versions. I also update some of releases at my own website, without changing the URL.

In NedoOS, the simplest case are one-file releases such as Super Mario: http://nedoos.ru/svn/dl.php?repname=Ned ... 5&peg=1335

Many others have several files and a directory with resources, such as ZX Battle City:

pavero, "Ukrainian" isn't available as a language option for added tape files.

Temporary solution, if you have new / unpublished RZX files you can upload them here.

When you add files for an existing entry there is a 'Comments' box. Is this comments for you, or are these comments published? Thanks

Both, I can make it public or not.

But it is much better to use "Official note" section of this form (Show advanced features).

It's a standard format, but don't know if it's a tape image or a snapshot. Maybe TMD2003 can help?

NO$ explains.

I've always treated .P and .O as tape files - say, the ZX81/80's equivalent of .TAP, seeing as .TZX can (and has been) adapted for the ZX81/80.

.Z81 is a snapshot, that's for certain. Actually, thanks to a certain troublesome former CSSCGC entrant, I had cause to examine the contents of .Z81 files - they're text files with everything EightyOne needs (and probably other emulators as well) needs to restore the memory state, and can be opened and edited in Notepad++.
Spectribution: Dr. Jim's Sinclair computing pages.
Features my own programs, modified type-ins, RZXs, character sets & UDGs, and QL type-ins... so far!

Generally you can define Related external link and select TV/Web advert (Youtube) as Website type.

But here is a better video from Modern Retro Gaming. The site is also indexed among Website types.

Hi There - first time uploader here.

I've uploaded an alternative cover to the Danish game Osten - here is the entry of Osten in the database:
https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/entry/3 ... trum/Osten

When uploading I get the message that the file already exists - and it should obviously be named something like:
3589_Front_2.jpg. However I do not think this is possible using the upload form - is this correct?

You can see the history here - first attempt was deleted by me:
https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/zxdb/ad ... ter_id=NaN

I also uploaded a new 600dpi version of the original cover - using the "replace existing" option. That added the _2 to the file name.

I hope someone will be able to assist.

Best Regards

Anders

Thanks for your upload.

Everything is fine, the orange exclamation mark is a notice only, not error. The proper filename will be added after processing the file.

But now there are two entries with the same content. So please remove the second one (the newest). If I understand it correctly it's no replacement, but an alternative inlay only.

Thank you for your explanation. I have uploaded two images:
The entry with #003297 is the the alternative cover.
https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/zxdb/ad ... _front.jpg

The entry with #003301 is a hi-res version of the existing cover scanned in 600dpi.
https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/zxdb/ad ... ront_2.jpg

So the latter is meant as a replacement of the existing cover in the database which is fairly low res. I believe the existing cover is less than 72dpi.
