Reviews for Alcatraz Harry (#137)

Well, it loaded, I think that's the only positive that comes to mind with this one. Rubbish sound, appalling flickery graphics and it all runs at the speed of a sedated sloth. You're in that well known pow camp Alcatraz(?) and have to find 30 items to help you escape from the 144 screens that make up the game and then take them back to the start location. Which is in the South of the game map. You then have to trail your way back to the top (whilst avoiding any guards that will shoot your head off), cross a minefield and at last escape. I'd love to know if anyone has ever completed this game, it makes watching Eastenders sound like fun.

For a game written in '84 this is very limited, but you have to agree that as a BASIC written game its not all that bad.
As for playing I, think its value lies only in the possibility of it being the inspiration for the game 'The Great Escape' - 1986,
and that's mainly all.

I quite enjoy this game, however, I did own it as a kid on the double tape that came bundled with 'WhoDunnIt' and all for £1.99. So as a kid I was well happy with that!
The game is obviously written in Basic Code and it shows. The graphics are nothing to write home about and the story doesn't fit the game? (The real Alcatraz being a prison on an island in the USA and the game seems to be a POW camp in somewhere like Germany?)
Apart from that, the game is quite simple to complete when you work out the pattern on the map. Worth a play, but again there are plenty of better games out there on the Speccy!

Mighty crap. Alcatraz Harry walks through the screens as if he was a psychotic thinking to be Jennifer Beals on LSD doing some breakdance. And it's moderately slow too, so you can admire his movements in all their stunning beauty. Anyway, you must wander the flip screen sectors of your favourite concentration camp, looking for escaping equipment, which is automatically taken from you each time you return into a sector where a guard is. So you must remember the number of the sector and avoid it. This should be enough to throw the game off the window. There are lots of sectors and lots of guards, and we are all affected by Alzheimer's, by now. A honorable mention to the buildings and barracks too, which are smaller than your sprite. Buy it now!

This review is a direct result of an unknown game called Prison Camp which from the screen shot appears to be ripped directly from this game, or at least the main sprite is anyway, and well I haven't done this one and within a minute I can see that I was going to regret this. It's hilariously bad but the way Harry moves around the screen is worth 5 points alone.
