Reviews for Friday the 13th (#1874)

Some strange sensation compelled me to write this review this very day. Perhaps it was the dull sound of the chainsaw in the tangled woodland nearby. Perhaps it was the shadowy masked figure lurking behind the garden wall. Perhaps it was the clean white cow skull the dog had unearthed in the night as he crunched and slavered into its eye sockets.
Whatever the reason I loaded up this game...
And was met by an apology that the promised music from the inlay did not fit onto the Spectrum version for lack of memory. Well, that's quite understandable I mused, lets see what we have got.

About 10 badly drawn flip screens to move around in (mostly green)
A save em up scenario (like an bizarre precursor of Lemmings)
3 buildings to visit
2 crappy FX (footsteps and scream)
The Spectrum font

Yeah, that should fill up the old Speccy!

Things that make this game worse than bad

Buildings with walls you can walk through as if you are hiding amongst the bricks
Bad keyboard responses and fiddly actions
Terrible animation
Characters that get stuck on the scenery
Clueless game concept
Inexplicable wrap round connections between screens

It actually should have been a good idea, creating a sanctuary for the good guys whilst hunting down Jason. But the implementation is bewilderingly poor for a game Domark hyped and hyped.

I can almost hear Jason weeping into his mask today, this day.

I used to have fun with this game because of its weird atmosphere mostly ... it is not an excellent game but it isnĀ“t bad either so my evaluation is rather positive. 4 out of 5 for me .. ;D

1986 Domark Ltd (UK)

Based upon the movie with the same name, this was a bit of a disappointment for a lot of people.
I personally really enjoyed the strange athmosphere of the game.
Especially when Jason's character appears and starts to slash everything around very quickly.
The game has a lot of letdowns and known bugs but still managed to deliver a nice eerie experience (for a 1986 Spectrum game that is).

I'd rather meet with Jason in person than play this awful mess. Yes, it's horrible - but in a disgusting sort of way. Graphics are abysmal, sound is non-existent and the game itself, while on paper could sound interesting, is a real exercise in boredom. Avoid at all costs.

A huge letdown. Poor graphics and even poorer gameplay leads this to complete disaster. Absolute rubbish.

The game that confuses being a representation of horror witih being a horror.
