Reviews for Harrier Attack! (#2241)

Review by Matt_B on 15 Mar 2009 (Rating: 3)

An early hit for Mike Richardson, this is a fairly simple Scramble clone with a nod to the, then recent, Falklands War.

You launch your Harrier from an aircraft carrier, fly past a frigate and soon approach a coastline coming under attack from anti aircraft guns and fighters. If you penetrate far enough into enemy territory you might get to attack a town and return to your carrier for a landing.

The graphics are fairly simple with everything fitting into exact character squares and a similarly jerky scroll. Gameplay is hampered by the fact that you only have one life; although you can eject, it serves to end the game.

At the time it was markedly inferior to Penetrator, although it did have the advantage that it ran in 16K. Now that that's somewhat less of an issue it can't be said to have aged too well though. That said, the spirit of the original lives on in the form of a recent sequel, from the original programmer, for the PC with excellent graphics and gameplay.

One of the best Spectrum games back in the day.

Let´s go back to the golden days of the Spectrum and you will hardly find a game as cool and as well designed as this one. A bit difficult but quite good.

Fond memories !! A beloved game ... those were the days !!! 4 / 5 .

1983 Durell Software (UK)
by Mike Richardson

An adaptation of an Oric game by Ron Jeffs, converted to the ZX by Mike Richardson as he so well points out.
Another classic of the early days that maintains a legion of followers due to its straightforward playability and simplicity. Clearly has not aged well and even back in, say 1985, it already looked outdated. I find it incredible easy to complete nowadays.

A mildly entertaining shoot-and-bomb-em-up which was, apparently, quite popular among 16K Spectrum users. I especially remember it for all the times your plane exploded in the air for no apparent reason (especially when flying through clouds). Hasn't aged well but still retains some of its original addictiveness.

Good fun for 16K, and controversial choice of recent history gives this Falkland's gun and bomb flying game some notoriety and it is fun to play albeit with limited appeal and addictive qualities reliant on its simplicity.

This would have been a lot more fun to play in 1983, sadly it doesn't play so well nowadays, nor does it look it either. It good enough for a quick blast but nothing more than that.

A nice game (I presume generally accepted). Maybe because this game from 1983, in spite of its UDG graphics, includes taking off, bombing and avoiding explosions and others planes while controlling your fuel and ammo levels. Not a bad game for that year!
