An above average conversion of a true legendary platformer with one of the most popular characters in video-games history : the inmortal Mario .
The inertia element adds some difficulty to this engaging game .
If kicking tortoises out of the way is your idea of fun, Mario Bros is your game .
Converted from the 1983 Nintendo arcade game of the same name, Mario Bros. unfortunately is not a great effort. Action feels a tad slow when compared with the smooth, fast one of the original coin-op. Graphics are not very detailed - they even look somewhat messy at times - and sound is almost absent.
What's worse, however, is that this conversion came too late: by the time it was released, the old coin-op was already dated. The Spectrum game feels just like that: a game which was born already old, so to speak.
In a nutshell, it's not bad, but as a full-price game it leaves a lot to be desired.
Total shambles!
Ocean fucked up again!
It's conversions like this that ensured that companies like Nintendo stopped licensing out their characters a long time before they became exclusive content.
At £7.95 in 1987, for a conversion of a game from 1983 this is pitiful. I know I couldn't do better, but this was a big, if not at the time "THE" software house, who had it all.
We all know after all these years though it was bells and whistles, and if certain people weren't working on certain licenses they were going to be wank.
Pity we didn't know back in the day, could've saved a few pennies...

I was never fond of this on arcade, I always preferred the Super Mario games to this. Saying that, at least there is a bit of enjoyment in it, unlike in this port which is an ugly, clumsy mess of a game. And this was released a year after Donkey Kong and look how nice that looked compared to this. Mario's legacy in video game history is a rich one to say the least, but not on the Speccy it ain't. I don't think Nintendo will mentioning this game in its Mario archive any time soon.
