Reviews for Striker (#4952)

Review by The Dean of Games on 03 Jun 2011 (Rating: 5)

1989 Cult Games (UK)
by Adam Parker, William Parker and Shaun McClure

The game is all about you trying to be a successful footballer as a striker, hence the game's name.
It starts when you are at the age of 18 and ends when you reach the critical age of 34!

The game includes 4 English divisions, and some german, italian, spanish and french divisions.
A good thing about the game is that there are lots of things to be won, such as the championship leagues, best scorer, cup medals and international championships while you progress on your career.

'Striker' is mainly a strategy game with a small, but totally indispensable action element, that turned this into one of the most addictive games of all time for the Spectrum. It's a lot harder than Footballer of the Year, which may explain it's longevity and cult status. If it weren't for the messy graphics I would rate this with a solid 5, nevertheless it still deserves to be called a classic.

Excellent implementation of a brilliant idea ... Striker is a game in a million that will test your skill and patience as a football player .

It combines the perfect dosis of strategy and skill just to make you a striker every team would like to have playing on its side .

Contrary to what it may appear at first glance , it´s not an easy task to beat the goalkeeper , so the game will keep you busy for a while . A TRUE CHALLENGE !!!

You can promote between seasons and that´s , in fact , an interesting feature of this Striker .

Thumbs up and hats off for this amazing game !!!

Better , impossible . 5/5 .

It's a great idea and proven to be extremely popular with Spectrum users, but I just don't get it. There are occassions where I get selected but never used, I do so well in training and still not get pick, I score two goals and still I'm dropped, it seems too random to me, maybe that's why it's popular, but I don't get it. Perhaps I'm missing something but I didn't really get into this. An original idea, but too random to get into.

On paper this may have seemed like a good idea but it doesn't really work. It plays a bit like Footballer of the Year but without the action scenes, unless you count pressing s every now and then as action.
