Reviews for Zybex (#5889)

Review by p13z on 20 May 2013 (Rating: 5)

A horizontally scrolling space shoot-em-up, slightly reminiscent of R-Type.
This game is all about the weapons, and more weapons. So much so, that you don't even have to worry with a fire button. Your guns are constantly auto-fired for you, with the fire button becoming the weapon select button. Attack waves of enemies keep arriving, thicker and faster, as do the weapons upgrades.
The play area is monochrome, with only the player sprite being of another colour. The graphics is clear, and the scrolling and animation is very smooth. Sound is as good as you could hope for on the 48k beeper, quite an achievement, really, considering how smoothly the game runs.
So, is it as good as R-Type? Possibly not, but Zybex was just a budget £2.99 release. The graphics are less colourful, but smoother than R-Type.
Where R-Type can not compete with Zybex, however, is simultaneous two player mode. As a two player game, this really shines, even today.

Really nice shmup from Led Zeppelin Games, still doing business as Eutechnyx these days. It's a standard horizontal shmup except that it fires the weapon for you and you have control of what weapon you fire, interesting variant and it pays off well. This impressed me a lot, in fact this was highly rated in magazines and I can definately see why.

One of the best budget shoot 'em ups. For £2.99 this was a steal!

Horizontally scrolling jetpac shooter characterized by the peculiarity of a constant autofire,
you just have to pick up all the power up's, and select among the 3 types of lasers the one that suits
the circumstancial swarm the most. It's got a pretty good average score in the WoS archive, and it's vastly playable, personally I find it a bit uninteresting. It surely was very good for a budget game.
3/5

1989 Zeppelin Games (UK)
by Gareth Briggs, Michael Owens and Kevin Franklin

This game reminds me a little bit another game the name which I can't remember, the main character looks and plays very similar, and like that game (_) this one plays rather well, it's a very competent shoot 'em up, not particularly original due to the amount of other similar games around, but it's has a slightly different feature, the automatic shooting, you just have to aim your weapon. The game is still quite enjoyable and nice looking.

Have to say I didn't enjoy this as much as the others and as much as I'd hoped. It's playable but lacks the enjoyment you expect in a game of this nature. It was cheap, that's all there is to say about it.

Great budget horizontally scrolling shoot-em-up where... you don't actually shoot, the fire key is used to change from 4 possible type of weapons.

Your character moves around the screen shooting waves after waves of enemies and avoiding obstacles. Destroying a wave of enemies gives you a token which will be used to reinforce one of your weapons. I reckon it does not sound very original, but the large and pretty detailed graphics and the slick, fast gameplay make up for that. This is also one of the very few Spectrum games of this kind where two people can play simultaneously. For its price, Zybex is a real bargain.

...as they said before... Do not bother to shoot, just select weapon.

Ideal for the office as there is no need to pound on the keyboard
repeatedly

I like the playability style of Zybex. Being a more strategy/puzzle oriented gamer I must thank shouldn't hitting Fire like no tomorrow
