Reviews for Lemmings (#9370)

Review by Stack on 03 Feb 2009 (Rating: 4)

Never a likely conversion to the Speccy, the amazing thing is that they pulled it off. Lemmings in mono and lacks elegance on the Spectrum but it is still the classic game Lemmings.
It is also distribution denied so unless you own the tape then there are certainly other versions to pilfer and emulate not least the amazing Sam Coupe one.
Play Sam Coupe Lemmings on the Sim Coupe emulator. It feels like you are playing on a Spectrum but with a panache that makes you wish everything Sam Coupe hadn't had self-destructed with such obdurate determination.

I was never a fan of the original Amiga game, so this port is going to have to be something pretty special to win me over. Let's begin.
When you start the game you might think the game has crashed causing the graphics to corrupt. Do not reload the game, they're supposed to look that way! Yes these graphics were deemed acceptable in 1991! So a pretty inauspicious start. Let's see if the gameplay can save things shall we?
The mouse control of the original doesn't translate well to keyboard or joystick. And if you're using a joystick you'll still need to use the keyboard to switch between icons. Even if you know exactly how to tackle a level, the fiddly controls will conspire to thwart you.

A truly dire game that retailed at £12.99. A few months later the Spectrum was effectively dead. Coincidence?

Converting the brilliant 16-bit 'save-em-up' to the Spectrum was quite an achievement.
The game is mostly here, with the progressively challenging levels and cute animation. Obviously there is much missing from the 16-bit versions, like the monochrome landscapes and lack of comical sounds. This is acceptable, and to be expected in a Spectrum conversion. The lack of mouse control, though, sucks a bit of joy from this classic. Levels can feel a bit slow and clunky to play, and the controls can become a challenge.
A shadow of the 16-bit versions, but impressive for a Speccy.

Below average conversion of a legendary late game . . . this should have been much better ! ! !

1,5 / 5 .

Lemmings is theoretically a great game and I really wanted to enjoy the Spectrum version, but this shoddy port doesn't do it justice though sadly.

Although I never got to play the Spectrum version or the original arcade game when they came out, I can't consider this game a bad conversion.
I don't know why the programmers choose this graphical approach, maybe they thought it wouldn't slow down the game too much, but it's definitely not the best feature.
The controls are a get-use-to thing. If it was me I would have sticked to a simpler key control method, but they thought otherwise.
The rest of the game I think, is accurately emulating the original game, and quite well I must add.
I even preferred to play the old Speccy version than the modern Java versions on the internet (although they are a lot better). So not much to complain here.
