Reviews for U.N. Squadron (#9445)

Not a bad shooter, it's definitely playable but unless I'm doing something wrong the game is a bit impossible once your chosen weapon runs out as your default weapon is weak as hell. One life seems a bit unfair also. And pity the sound is so quiet, the music sounded very good. Quite good but its flaws tarnish this from being great.

Excellent conversion by Tiertex of the Capcom coin-op, UN Squadron keeps the gameplay features of the original whilst not sacrificing too much the visual and audio departments in its transition to the Spectrum.

UN Squadron is basically a horizontally-scrolling shoot-em-up where you, at the start of each game, can pick your pilot/aircraft combination from a choice of three, each of them being different in speed, resistance and firepower. You can also buy several power-ups in order to enhance your offensive and defensive capabilities.

Thumbs up all the way!

A another conversion of a Capcom arcade coin-op with the same name. It's pretty well done, very addictive, very enjoyable, but the monochrome colors, oh my, they spoil things so much for me. The type of graphics are not it's best feature also, they are all well designed but are a bit hard to detect sometimes and lack the feel of the classic looking ones. Our plane looks more like a glider than an actual plane. But all in all it's a great game, just a bit different from what I'm used to.

U.N. Squadron by Tiertex (as in-game text claims).

Another arcade conversion. I never played the original arcade, so I don't know how faithful the conversion is, but as a Spectrum game it is quite poor. It is slow (I found it much better and more playable at 200% emulation speed), and the worst thing is that it is slow for nothing: the monochrome graphics is detailed, but sadly, you are unable to see enemies and bullets. And that ruins the game completely.

If only I'd be able to clearly distinguish the enemies and their bullets from the background...

So, it is 2.5, and I rounded it to 3. It could be much better if developers made graphics simplier and easier to see. But for now it is a monochrome pixel mess. Play it if you have nothing better to do, but be prepared to alot of unfair death.
