Reviews for Full Throttle (#1908)

Review by The Dean of Games on 18 Jul 2011 (Rating: 5)

1984 - Micromega (UK)
by Mervyn J. Estcourt

I still think this is the best motor racing game ever. Simple superb.
There is no gear changing, but the game is hard enough and very competitive with 39 moto racers to deal with. It only lacks a championship.
Love the sounds, love the graphics, love the race action. Brilliant.

A marvellous game. It is incredible that you can do this with a 16k Spectrum . Never surpassed.

In 1983 this was probably the best arcade/racing game available for the Spectrum, and is still fondly remembered by many, including myself. Although it does not look very well when compared with games of the following years - mainly for the basic, flickery sprites - and the gameplay can lead to frustration, since when one of the other contestants touches you, your speed goes to zero (making catching up with them next to impossible), Full Throttle is still rather enjoyable, due to the different tracks available and the fast action. 6/10

This is controversial but I find this to be overrated. The graphics flicker constantly and the gameplay is too annoying as with even the softest kiss of the other bikers your speed drops completely to zero. When you look at Merv Estcourt's classic Deathchase and then look at this game I am always left wondering what the hell went wrong with this. Massively disappointed.

Such a cracking race game, easily the best race game on the Spectrum. Its unforgiving, but that's the challenge.

If you are easily disheartened Full Throttle will beat you, but perservere and you can still make mistakes and win.

Race games converted from the Arcade don't do it for me. Those 'Extended Play' mechanisms were so false, and designed to eat coins. Why translate coin greed to a home cumputer?

Full Throttle is about starting at the back of the grid and aiming to win the race vs. 40 others. It is fast and the tracks give a real sense of speed and momentum. Passing the lead flickery biker on the final straight feels sensational.

Given that the benchmark race game in 1983 was a time trial without competition - Chequered Flag - then Full Throttle was a massive leap forwards.

This isn't a bad game and it's quite fun, but the gameplay is rather unfair to me, I guess that creates an element of skill that caught onto to many players, but too bad it didn't catch onto to me.
