Reviews for Maziacs (#3100)

Review by p13z on 26 Sep 2009 (Rating: 4)

Fantastic maze game. The first game I played after upgrading from a 16k to 48k Spectrum. Despite the very simple and repetative nature of the game, it could keep you playing for hours, and always seemed to get the pulse going if you ended up with a maziac on your tail. If I was rating from nostlagia alone, this would definately be a 5. However, having re-played it recently I think it is probably a bit simple for top marks. One of the first titles on the Spectrum from Don Priestly, who, in my opinion, was single handedly responsible for raising the bar for 8 bit entertainment many times.

Maziacs had heart. Even for the time, it was not technically advanced. However there is a sheer joy to the game that drags you in. The choice of colours is simple but bright, and there is a surprising amount of life in the stickman. The adverts of the game claim that a Hollywood stuntman staged the fight sequences. This is a dubious claim, however when a Maziac catches you without a sword, the protracted fight sequence that follows will have you holding your breath over the outcome.

Based on an old favourite for the ZX81, Mazogs, this was one of the early Spectrum hits for DK'Tronics.

You control a stick man in a maze populated by monsters, the aforementioned Maziacs. You need to locate some treasure, indulge in some fights, preferably armed with a sword, and make your way to the exit. Some prisoners will show you the shortest route, but they won't be too concerned about whether it's safe or not.

The graphics are a bit simplistic but well animated, particularly the fight sequences. The game does show its ZX81 heritage with the blocky movement though and the original is arguably more charming.

Also, the random maze layout can vary between trivial and nigh impossible from game to game. Still, it's a neat little effort that still stands out for the original touches.

A classic maze game from the early days of the Spectrum.

The baddies are truly nasty and the movement is more than correct.

Iconic legendary game MAZIACS which has known several remakes.

Not superb but quite good.

maze game maziacs (dK'tronics) contains one of the most remarkable examples of 1983's matchstick man.
i've only really played it now, never had it at the time. it's not bad, i must say. it surely isn't one of those games that goes on endlessly:
you "only" have to find the treasure, and then the exit, and the game is over - there's not a next level.
random elements and various skill leves constitute the variations. it surely plays well.
it's very strange that you don't really fight the enemy monsters, but you watch your character fight, rooting for him, becoming passive,
as if it was an animated rpg game (and if fact the level of your energy, and the possession of a sword plays a good role in determing the outcome).
nicely done. an early don priestley, when he wasn't yet programming interactive cartoons.

Few demises are more thrilling than death by Maziac.

Great maze game by the great Don Priestley (3D Tanx, Dictator, Popeye, The Trap door, ...).

You must find the treasure and return to the starting point through a randomly generated maze infested with the terrible Maziacs, the guardians of the treasure. You'll need a sword when you come across one of these creatures and food to recover after the fight. The prisoners will show you the route to the treasure.

A graphically simple game but quite addictive. One of the best Spectrum games of the earliest years (1982-83).

This is a really good game. It's good fun and then it's challenging at the same time depending on the maze. The fact that no maze is the same every time you play the game adds to the appeal and challenge. I really enjoyed this one.

This is instead a really old game. But it also deserves recognition.

I hardly dare to deviate from the general feeling to give it a grade of 4. Deserved.

Great maze game. A bit Archaic
BUT a very good example of how they could make a simple but effective game. Interesting the animations
